How? That’s the question on our minds throughout most of our adult life. How do I achieve my career potential?
Shouldn’t we ask what is our career potential? Or better yet, what inspires us? What’s our passion? Do you have a passion?
Along my journey to find my passion(s) in life I took the time to read as much as I could about “passion” or “living passionately”. I had followed the rules much of my life, doing the 9-5 job, dinner, kids activities and community work. All that you’d expect out of any middle class American Mom in today’s world. I worked diligently in my field, raised my kids and ate my vegetables.
After many years of being quite content in my growth within my field I realized I was not entirely fulfilled. I was not impassioned by what I was doing anymore. I realized there was a plateau of sorts coming and it was time to find my inner fire. Putting it more simply, I was bored. I needed to become passionate, I needed to step outside my comfort zone to grow in the direction I was being called. In order to do that I needed to find a way to empower myself to take the chances and make the mistakes.
For everyone this quest for career potential takes different paths, finding yours is key. Realizing this will change as you change and evolved is freeing. Allowing yourself to go in the directions you need to is empowering and can sometimes be down right terrifying.
Taking some personal and professional inventory is a great place to start. Find out what moves you, what excites you, what is spellbinding in this life for you. Be prepared for the ride, along with some traffic, roadwork and occasional detours and remember the old adage “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”.
